Woven plates in Haitian Vodou, often referred to as laye (or layo), are essential ritual tools crafted from natural fibers, straw, or bamboo. These items serve as traditional offering trays used to present food, gifts, and sacred objects to the lwa (spirits) on
Key Roles and Uses of Laye
  • Offerings and Divination: Laye are used as, or on, altars to hold items such as fruit (guava, banana), candies, and other items meant for the spirits, including specific lwa like Kouzen Zaka or for, ceremonies.
  • Symbolism: They represent a connection to the ancestors and the earth, frequently used in sèvis lwa (service to the spirits) to hold sacrificial food or to create sacred space for divination.
  • Ritual Tools: They are sometimes paired with other ritual items like canari (clay jars), djakout (straw bags), or pe kwi (altar items).
  • Structure: They are typically round, hand-woven mats or trays designed for bothpractical storage of ritual materials and the display of sacred food, notes.
Note: In the context of offerings to the dead, they may hold "manje gede" (food for the dead) in ceremonies. [1, 2, 3]
These woven items are a popular form of traditional Haitian art and serve a deeply significant spiritual function in both 21 Divisions and mainstream Haitian Vodou.
