An Asyet Emaye (or Asyèt Emaye) is a white enamel plate used as a foundational ritual tool in Haitian Vodou, 21 Divisions (Dominican Voodoo), and related practices like Hoodoo and Conjure. In Haitian Creole, "Asyèt" means plate and "Emaye" means enamel.
Primary Ritual Uses
These plates are prized for their durability and white color, which represents purity and is suitable for offerings to any divinity or lwa. Common uses include:
  • Offerings & Feeding: Serving "sacred foods" and drinks to spirits (lwa or misterios) to honor and nourish them.
  • Oil Lamps (Iliminasyon): Serving as a base for traditional oil lamps or candles during illumination ceremonies.
  • Altar Foundation: Acting as a clean surface for ritual items like herbs, stones, or sacred objects.
  • Ancestral Past: The use of "old-fashioned" enamelware is intended to recall and honor the practices of ancestral generations. [
Tradition Context
  • Haitian Vodou: A central ritual object for communicating with and serving the lwa.
  • 21 Divisions: Used in Dominican Voodoo to connect with the hierarchies of spirits known as Los Misterios.
  • Hoodoo & Conjure: Employed in African American folk magic for ancestor veneration, spiritual cleansing, and as a base for candle magic or rootwork.
